How to break in Birkenstocks

If you're not used to Birkenstocks they can feel a little strange at first because they fit differently to other shoes and need breaking in. Birkenstock footwear works by supporting your arches, reducing the strain on the muscles or the foot. This guide has been written to give you some tips on getting used to them!
When you first try on your Birkenstocks, take time to walk around indoor sand get used to them. You should break them in gradually. Your feet should fit closely to prevent your foot slipping side to side. Because few people have perfectly shaped feet, new shoes may feel 'different'. Your toes may have become curled from wearing tight shoes, so make sure your Birkenstocks are long enough to accomodate them once they have resumed their natural shape. The Birkenstock footbed is contoured to match the shape of a healthy foot. Additionally, if you have worn high heels for years your Achilles tendons may have contracted, but Birkenstock footwear can help to restore their natural length.
Birkenstocks are designed to be worn comfortably, with support coming from the foot bed, not from tightly buckled straps. If might take a few days to get used to the feeling, but your toes will soon learn to grip the footbeds as you walk. The toe grips should be in the right place for your feet and some wearers can find the arch support feels prominent and "hard" initially, but as you wear them the footbeds will become softer and more flexible. Soon your shoes will adjust to the shap of your feet and form a truely unique fit that, properly cared for, will provide you with years of long lasting comfort.
Enjoy!
